If pandemic influenza occurs:
  • Vaccine may not be available for 6 months.
  • Antivirals may be used to treat the ill with none left for preventative treatment.
  • Society, including governmental functions, may be disrupted.


Social distancing plans are based on the scientific knowledge of how the influenza virus spreads. This knowledge is then applied to the activities of life to reduce the risk of exposure. Public health experts such as the Centers for Disease Control publish what are macro-plans for social distancing. These may or may not be effective. This site explains the idea of Personal Social Distancing, a concept of an individual or small group can protect themselves.
